English Language Arts

Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes:
During this year students will explore the themes of self awareness and develop a sense of self identity through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. Students will examine narrative text about personal, heroic, and tragic journeys. During the first unit students will read an excerpt from Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and other personal poems. Through these personal narratives, students will craft their own short narrative about the world they come from. In the second unit students will build their understanding of story telling and embarking on transformative adventures as they read three versions of The Odyssey by Homer. For the third unit students will examine how choices can affect one’s destiny by reading Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Lastly students will complete their exploration of the hero’s journey through a reading of The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. Students will also express themselves artificially through arts integration in two end of semester project based units.
Materials:
Students will be required to bring the following with them to class EVERYDAY:
Digital Resources:
This will rely heavily on digital content. Student will conduct 80% of the coursework that will be provided on the Google Chromebooks provided in class. Assignments and content will be posted on Google Classroom
CLASS Expectations
ATTENDANCE:
It is crucial that you are in class everyday. If you are absent without a valid excuse you will miss the work assigned in the class you missed. You have a graded assignment everyday in class so it is important to be here everyday. Valid excuses for absences must be turned into office in writing within 24 hours of absence, ex. Doctor’s notes, letters from home,etc. If absence is excused all work missed in class will be exempted

HOME PRACTICE:
Home-practice will be given on a daily basis and students are expected to have home-practice completed by the beginning of each class period. Home-practice that is graded and discussed in class the same day will not be accepted late.
Home-Practice will consist of students completing reading and annotations for the current units text. Students are to read assigned pages from text and take notes, notes are due on GS the night before the next class. Students will be assigned three Accountable Independent Reading Logs, more information will be presented as the semester progresses.
GRADING Policies:
LAPCHS school-wide grading system is through Standards Referenced grading:
Late Work, Make-Ups, and Extra Credit
There will be NO exceptions for late work or make up work. You are responsible for you own work. Exceptions can be made on extremely rare conditions and must be approved by teachers and administration. There is no extra credit, if you focus on the assigned work then you will not need extra credit.
EXPECTATIONS/ NON-NEGOTIABLES/ CONSEQUENCES:
Mutual Respect Policy
In this classroom, students and teachers are expected to respect each other at all times. In order to maintain a positive work environment, we will make a pledge to uphold these 5 pillars of Respect.
ESCALATION:
If students are not performing to expectations they will be given a chance by the teacher to make corrections. Refusal to follow the teacher’s advice will result in ESCALATION of the situation which will result in a Call Home, referral to office admins, intervention with Advisor, and/or lost privileges.

Through the course students will participate in units that are designed for success in the listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections of the ELPAC test. During each unit, students will develop language skills supported by the Just Words Curriculum. Students will also be reading various texts and watching films.

- 2 pencils with erasers
- 2 red pens
- 2 Colored Highlighters

CLASS Expectations
- You are to be here on time, ready to work. Once the bell rings you are to report directly to class. First offence you will have a conversation with me outside. Second offense I will have YOU call your parents and tell them what you did. Third offense, you will be sent to the office for administrative action.
- There is absolutely no eating in my classroom.
- No cell phone usage. This means texting, social media, calling your mom, and listening to music with headphones.
- Phones are to be locked away in chromebook cart at all times. You get your phone back when you return your chromebook at the end of the class.
- If you want to speak please raise your hand. Do not interrupt others.
- Foul language will not be tolerated.

Each rubric will be based on a grading scale from 1 through 4. Class will go over grading rubric when assessments will be assigned. 1=NP, 2=C, 3=B, 4=A.
- Receiving a 1 on an assignment means you failed the assignment. Multiple 1’s will results in an NP grade for the class.
- Missing assignments will be considered M on the gradebook. Multiple M’s will result in an NP grade for the class.
- Grades will be posted on both on PowerSchool and Google Classroom.
- Grades will be updated every five weeks over the course of the school year. (This is subject to change according to schedule)
- Students will be turn in ALL assessments digitally on Google Classroom.
- Parents can follow student’s grading on both PowerSchool and Google Classroom.
